What is a prophylactic gastropexy?
A prophylactic gastropexy is a preventative surgery performed to reduce the risk of a life-threatening condition called gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV). GDV is when the stomach twists on itself and can be fatal.During this procedure, the stomach is surgically attached to the body wall, preventing it from twisting.
What is GDV?
GDV occurs when:
• The stomach fills with gas (dilation/bloat)
• The stomach then twists on itself (volvulus)
This twisting:
• Blocks blood supply to the stomach
• Prevents gas from escaping
• Rapidly leads to shock and can be fatal without emergency surgery
Why consider a prophylactic gastropexy?
This procedure is performed before any problem occurs to:
• Significantly reduce the risk of the stomach twisting
• Prevent a life-threatening emergency
• Avoid high-risk emergency surgery
• Provide peace of mind for owners
Important:
• Gastropexy does NOT prevent bloating (gas build-up)
• It DOES prevent the dangerous twisting
When is the surgery performed?
• Commonly performed at the same time as desexing
• Recommended in young, healthy dogs of at-risk breeds
• Can be performed laparoscopically in some cases
What are the risks?
As with any surgery, there are some risks:
• General anaesthetic risks
• Infection or inflammation at the surgical site
• Mild discomfort during recovery
• Rarely, failure of the gastropexy
Overall, this is considered a safe and routine preventative procedure with no additional risks than a routine spey/desexing.
How does the surgery help?
The stomach is secured in place, preventing it from twisting.
If bloating occurs later in life, it is much less likely to become life-threatening.
