EUTHANASIA PROCESS

Making the decision to say goodbye to your beloved pet is never easy. At Chancellor Park Vet Surgery, we deeply understand that pets are cherished members of the family, and we’re here to support you through this emotional time. Knowing what to expect can help ease some of the natural anxiety that comes with this decision. If you would like to talk through any of the steps below in more detail, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

BOOKING THE APPOINTMENT

When you call to make an appointment, we will do our best to schedule it during a quieter time in the clinic to ensure privacy and minimal stress for both you and your pet.

We also recommend the use of Pre-Visit Pharmaceuticals (PVPs) to help reduce any anxiety or stress your pet may feel before arriving at the clinic. Our reception team will organise this for you. Once the prescription has been prepared by the veterinarian, you’ll receive a text message letting you know it’s ready to collect.

HOME EUTHANASIA

We also offer Home Euthanasia. For Home Euthanasia one of our friendly Veterinarians and Vet Nurses will attend your home for the appointment. Please call our reception to book this appointment.

AFTERCARE OPTIONS

One of the most important decisions is choosing the aftercare that feels right for you and your family. We offer the following options:

  • Home Burial – You are welcome to take your pet home for burial. Please ensure you check with your local council regarding the regulations on home burial in your area.

  • Private Cremation – Your pet can be privately cremated and their ashes returned to you. We are happy to work with any provider you prefer and can organise everything on your behalf. We recommend Pet Rest, a trusted and compassionate service.

  • Medical Burial – We can arrange for your pet to be collected by the local council and cremated with other animals.

You will receive an online consent form via email ahead of your appointment. This allows us to complete all necessary documentation in advance, so you can simply focus on being present with your pet on the day. Please ensure your preferred aftercare option is selected on this form.

Our reception team will also call a few days prior to your appointment to finalise payment over the phone, to minimise your time at the front desk on the day.

ON THE DAY

When you arrive at the clinic, we will guide you to a private consultation room as quickly as possible.

You may choose to:

  • Stay with your pet during the process, or

  • Leave your pet in our care, where one of our gentle nurses will stay with them and comfort them as if they were their own.

If you choose to stay, a nurse will briefly take your pet to the treatment area to place an IV catheter in their leg. This allows the veterinarian to administer the euthanasia agent in the most peaceful and painless way possible. Your pet will then be returned to you, and you will have the opportunity to hold and comfort them while they peacefully pass.

SAYING GOODBYE

After your pet has passed, you are welcome to stay in the room for as long as you need to say your final goodbyes.

We are here to support you during every step of this journey with kindness, care, and respect.
